Noli Me Tangere, the Latin phrase meaning "touch me not," is a series of comics by David Mazzucchelli. It was published in four issues between 1986 and 1987, and two trade paperback editions were published in 1992. The series follows the story of Stephan Crane, the illegitimate son of John Henry Crane, an immensely wealthy railroad magnate. Mazzucchelli's first graphic novel tells the story of Stephan's childhood with his mother at her home on Long Island. It also explores his struggles with love and loss as he tries to make sense out of life given his difficult circumstances. More importantly, it is a deeply insightful exploration into American society through its conflicts with classism. The inks in each panel and page were inked in black and white. These inked panels were then photocopied and added on to the previously drawn black and white panels. The comic is mostly in black and white, but it does make use of some color when drawing the backgrounds, like when Stephan is looking for medical treatment for his mother or when Stephan's father is described as a 'bohemian'. Mazzucchelli contrasts the workmanlike drawings with moments of psychological intimacy between characters. For example, when Mrs. Crane banishes her servant for trying to feed Stephan his dinner instead of forcing him to get it himself he cries uncontrollably, but Mrs. Crane does not comfort him or scold him. At the end of the issue he decides to leave, saying "I'm going to go now, Mrs. Crane." She then tells him that she only wanted him "to see how it feels." The series was collected into two volumes and published by Kitchen Sink Press:It was later collected again by Pantheon Books:The first volume won an Eisner award in 1991 for Best Graphic Album. The second volume was nominated for awards by Friends of Lulu and the Harvey Awards. "Noli Me Tangere" has also been noted for its participation in the Underground Comix movement. The comic has drawn comparisons to "Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth", another graphic novel by Chris Ware. "Noli Me Tangere" was released as a motion comic with animation by Waltz with Bashir director Ari Folman. Motion comics are based on series of comic book panels which are animated frame-by-frame like a film.
